Choosing the right level of support for your loved one can feel overwhelming. We’re here to help you understand your options and feel confident about moving forward.
Levels of care
Starting Where Your Loved One Is
Many families begin right where you are now — recognizing that your loved one requires extra support, but uncertain what level is the best fit for their needs. As you consider senior living options, you may be asking yourself, “Am I choosing the right type of care?”
As a first step toward determining the appropriate level of senior care, think about how your loved one’s life looks from day to day. What does their routine involve? Do they have trouble cooking for themselves? Are they unable to remember tasks they need to complete, or the events of the day? Are they unable to take a shower or bathe themselves?
Of course, safety is the highest priority. Does your loved one need help remembering to take important medication? Are they in danger of falling without anyone there to help them? Are you concerned about the neighborhood your loved one currently lives in?
Finally, consider quality of life. Is your loved one eating a nutritious, high-protein diet? Are they getting enough exercise? Do they have an active, fulfilling social life? Are they able to safely transport themselves to all of the community events they’d like to attend?
Remember, when it comes to choosing a care program, there’s no single “correct” answer. You know your loved one best. From independent living to assisted living to memory care to extended care, the right choice is the one that meets your loved one where they are right now, even as their needs change over time.
