how it all started

Our Story

Two local businessmen set out to find senior living options for their aging parents. One found a wonderful community in California for his mother, where she thrived. The other struggled to find an option he loved here in Hawaii. It was this struggle that became the driving force behind their shared mission: to build a quality community for families facing similar situations. Their determination laid the foundation for The Plaza Assisted Living — a premier assisted living community and Hawaii’s standard of excellence in senior living.

Innovators in senior living for more than 20 years

2004

The Plaza Assisted Living opens its first community at Punchbowl, introducing a locally rooted senior living option built on dignity, hospitality, and aloha.

2010

Opening of The Plaza at Mililani, extending trusted assisted living services to Central Oahu families.

2011

Formal adoption of our mission and core values: Friendship, Respect, Integrity, Excellence, Nurturing, Dignity, Support, Hospitality, Innovation, and Passion.

2011

Formal adoption of our Best Friends™ Approach to memory care, deepening our person-centered philosophy.

2012

Continued growth with the opening of our Moanalua community, serving families near town and the airport area.

2014

Expansion to Leeward Oahu, bringing assisted living and community connection to Pearl City residents.

2015

Opening of our Waikiki community, offering senior living in the heart of Honolulu.

2016

Launch of Hali’a Memory Care, a specialized program rooted in the Best Friends™ Approach, offering compassionate support for those living with memory loss.

2019

Expansion to Windward Oahu, welcoming residents and families in Kaneohe.

2019

Introduction of Lamakū Extended Care, providing continuity and stability for residents whose needs increase over time.

2024

Launch of The Plaza Life Protocol, our signature wellness program built around four pillars: exercise, nutrition, stress reduction, and hydration. This program reflects our belief that older adulthood is a time to thrive with strength, purpose, and connection.

2024

Major renovation of The Plaza at Punchbowl, reflecting our ongoing commitment to innovation, hospitality, and continuous improvement.
